How to Document Hurricane Damage in Florida (Step-by-Step)

Hurricane damage claims live or die on documentation. Here's exactly what Tampa Bay homeowners should photograph, save, and write down within the first 72 hours after a storm.

Florida sees more hurricanes than any state in the country, and the difference between a fair insurance payout and a denied claim almost always comes down to one thing: documentation. After 10+ years handling Tampa Bay hurricane claims, we can tell you with certainty that what you do in the first 72 hours after the storm matters more than anything else.

1. Document Before You Touch Anything

The single biggest mistake homeowners make is starting cleanup before documenting the damage. We get it — water is pooling, drywall is sagging, and you want to act. But the moment you move a piece of debris or pull a wet baseboard, you've changed the scene the adjuster needs to see.

Take a full walkthrough of your property — exterior first, then interior, room by room — and photograph everything before any cleanup begins. If safety allows, get on the roof or use a drone. If you can't, take photos from the ground at multiple angles.

2. Photo Checklist: Every Florida Homeowner Should Capture

  • ▸Roof — every slope, from at least two angles, with close-ups of missing shingles or tiles
  • ▸Gutters and downspouts — detachment, dents, or storm debris
  • ▸Soffit, fascia, and siding — wind lifting, gaps, or impact damage
  • ▸Windows and doors — broken seals, cracks, water intrusion at sills
  • ▸Pool cage / lanai screens — torn screens, bent frames
  • ▸Fence and gates — leaning, downed sections, broken posts
  • ▸Trees and landscape — fallen branches, especially any that struck the home
  • ▸Interior ceilings — water stains, sagging drywall, exposed insulation
  • ▸Walls and floors — water lines, swollen baseboards, buckled flooring
  • ▸Personal property — every damaged item, in place, before disposal

3. Video Walkthroughs Are Just as Important

Photos document moments. Video documents context — the sound of water dripping, the squish of soaked carpet, the actual scale of damage that a photo can flatten. Walk through every room of your home with your phone in landscape mode, narrating as you go. Mention the date, the storm name, and what each piece of damage is.

4. Save Everything in Writing

Florida insurance claims involve a paper trail. Save: your original policy, all claim correspondence (especially emails and texts from the adjuster), receipts for any emergency repairs (tarp, board-up, water extraction), and a written log of every phone call with date, time, person you spoke with, and what was discussed.

5. Don't Throw Anything Away

We've seen Tampa Bay homeowners curb-haul ruined furniture, soaked flooring, and damaged contents before the adjuster ever inspected — and watched insurance carriers use that as grounds to deny those items entirely. Keep damaged contents in your garage or on your property until the carrier's adjuster physically inspects them. Photograph them again before they leave your property.

6. Get Emergency Repairs Done — But Document First

Florida policies require you to mitigate further damage. That means tarping the roof, boarding broken windows, and extracting standing water. Do those repairs — but photograph the damage in its original state first, save every receipt, and never throw the damaged materials away.

7. Call a Public Adjuster Before the Insurance Adjuster

Once the insurance company's adjuster steps onto your property, the value of your claim is largely determined. Their job is to find reasons to pay less. A public adjuster — like our team at Claim Beast — represents you, documents the damage independently, prepares a competing estimate, and negotiates the carrier up to a fair settlement. We don't get paid unless you do, so there's no downside to a free claim review before you accept any offer.
